Here, we use the concept of cognitive mapping to investigate the plasticity of social relationships in younger and older adults. We describe social relationships within a 'social space', defined as a two-dimensional grid composed of the axis 'power' and 'affiliation', and investigate it using a 3D virtual environment with interacting avatars. We show that participants remap dimensions in 'social space' when avatars show conflicting behavior compared to consistent behavior and that, while older adults show similar updating behavior than younger adults, they show a distinct reduction in remapping social space. Our data provide first evidence that older adults show more rigid social behavior when avatars change their behavior in the dimensions of power and affiliation, which may explain age-related social behavior differences in everyday life. 000162637 536__ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-353$$a353 - Clinical and Health Care Research (POF4-353)$$cPOF4-353$$fPOF IV$$x0 000162637 588__ $$aDataset connected to CrossRef, PubMed, , Journals: pub.dzne.de 000162637 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aAged 000162637 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aFemale 000162637 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aHumans 000162637 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aInterpersonal Relations 000162637 650_2 $$2MeSH$$aMale 000162637 7001_ $$0P:(DE-2719)2810583$$aWolbers, Thomas$$b1$$udzne 000162637 7001_ $$0P:(DE-2719)9001179$$aKuehn, Esther$$b2$$eLast author$$udzne 000162637 773__ $$0PERI:(DE-600)2615211-3$$a10.1038/s41598-021-01258-7$$gVol. 11, no. 1, p. 21910$$n1$$p21910$$tScientific reports$$v11$$x2045-2322$$y2021 000162637 8564_ $$uhttps://pub.dzne.de/record/162637/files/DZNE-2021-01333.pdf$$yOpenAccess 000162637 8564_ $$uhttps://pub.dzne.de/record/162637/files/DZNE-2021-01333.pdf?subformat=pdfa$$xpdfa$$yOpenAccess 000162637 909CO $$ooai:pub.dzne.de:162637$$pdnbdelivery$$pdriver$$pVDB$$popen_access$$popenaire 000162637 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588)1065079516$$6P:(DE-2719)2811736$$aDeutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen$$b0$$kDZNE 000162637 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588)1065079516$$6P:(DE-2719)2810583$$aDeutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen$$b1$$kDZNE 000162637 9101_ $$0I:(DE-588)1065079516$$6P:(DE-2719)9001179$$aDeutsches Zentrum für Neurodegenerative Erkrankungen$$b2$$kDZNE 000162637 9131_ $$0G:(DE-HGF)POF4-353$$1G:(DE-HGF)POF4-350$$2G:(DE-HGF)POF4-300$$3G:(DE-HGF)POF4$$4G:(DE-HGF)POF$$aDE-HGF$$bGesundheit$$lNeurodegenerative Diseases$$vClinical and Health Care Research$$x0 000162637 9141_ $$y2021 000162637 915__ $$0LIC:(DE-HGF)CCBYNV$$2V:(DE-HGF)$$aCreative Commons Attribution CC BY (No Version)$$bDOAJ$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1190$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBiological Abstracts$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0160$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEssential Science Indicators$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0113$$2StatID$$aWoS$$bScience Citation Index Expanded$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0700$$2StatID$$aFees$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0510$$2StatID$$aOpenAccess 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0561$$2StatID$$aArticle Processing Charges$$d2021-02-03 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0100$$2StatID$$aJCR$$bSCI REP-UK : 2021$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0200$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bSCOPUS$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0300$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bMedline$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0501$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bDOAJ Seal$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0500$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bDOAJ$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0030$$2StatID$$aPeer Review$$bDOAJ : Blind peer review$$d2022-08-08T09:38:07Z 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0600$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bEbsco Academic Search$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0030$$2StatID$$aPeer Review$$bASC$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0199$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bClarivate Analytics Master Journal List$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)0150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bWeb of Science Core Collection$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1050$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bBIOSIS Previews$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1040$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bZoological Record$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)1150$$2StatID$$aDBCoverage$$bCurrent Contents - Physical, Chemical and Earth Sciences$$d2023-03-30 000162637 915__ $$0StatID:(DE-HGF)9900$$2StatID$$aIF < 5$$d2023-03-30 000162637 9201_ $$0I:(DE-2719)1310002$$kAG Wolbers$$lAging & Cognition$$x0 000162637 980__ $$ajournal 000162637 980__ $$aVDB 000162637 980__ $$aUNRESTRICTED 000162637 980__ $$aI:(DE-2719)1310002 000162637 9801_ $$aFullTexts
