Abstract: The goal of this symposium is to review and discuss recent research on factors determining the chances of individuals to survive to advanced old age. As most of the deaths in European countries occur at older ages, an explicit focus of the symposium will be determinants of late-age mortality. Participants will present epidemiological data and demographic information from Austria, England, Finland, and Germany. Some speakers will discuss the relevance of events early in adult life (e.g., reproductive history, occupational history) for late-life mortality. Others will examine the effects of late-life circumstances (e.g., current socioeconomic factors, social resources) on late-age survival.
