Abstract: When navigating, humans and other species rely on landmarks and on self-motion cues to infer their position in space. It is suggested that in cue-integration processes, reliable cues are highly weighed, compared to less reliable ones. Yet, the neural circuits that underlie weighting of navigational cues are not fully understood. The current study explores the role of the entorhinal-hippocampal connections in weighting navigational cues. High resolution, functional images (7 t fMRI) were acquired while participants performed a navigational task, subjected to modified reliability levels of landmarks and self-motion cues. The findings indicate that shifts in spatial-cue reliability are associated with modifications in functional connectivity from the entorhinal cortex to the CA3 hippocampal-subfield. The findings suggest a neural mechanism which entailed in the weighting of landmark and self-motion cues during wayfinding.
